Typing Accents in Spanish

Windows

Windows 11 (US International Keyboard)
  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to the Time & language section.
  3. Click on the Language & region option.
  4. Select the pre-installed language pack, likely English (United States), and click on the three-dot menu button.
  5. Select Language options.
  6. Click on the Add a keyboard button.
  7. Choose United States-International.
  8. Select the keyboard layout on the taskbar in the bottom right.
Windows 10 (US International Keyboard)
Typing Accents
  • Press the apostrophe key and then the vowel sequentially, for example: ' e = é
  • You can also press the right alt key and the vowel concurrently, for example: right alt e = é
  • right alt n = ñ (sequentially or concurrently)
  • right alt ? = ¿ (sequentially or concurrently)
  • right alt ! = ¡ (sequentially or concurrently)
  • right alt y = ü (concurrently) or " u = ü (sequentially)
Typing Quotes

You can toggle back to the regular keyboard, or you can type the following:

  • right alt ' = ' (concurrently)
  • ' Space = ' (sequentially)
  • right alt " = " (concurrently)
  • " Space = " (sequentially)

Here are more options for Windows. (However, your instructor strongly recommends the above option instead.)

MacOS

Option 1

Hold down the letter you wish to accent. A menu with accent options should pop up. Instead of using the mouse you may want to just type the number of the option you'd prefer.

Option 2

Type Option plus E, then the vowel, for example: option e then a = á
More information here

Option 3

There is a US International Keyboard option for MacOS. (The above two are likely to be better options though.)

  1. Go to the Keyboard pane in System Preferences.
  2. Select the Input Sources tab.
  3. Click the plus button on the bottom left.
  4. Select US-International - PC

Switch keyboard layouts:

  1. Click the language name in the upper right.
  2. Select the keyboard layout you want to use.

Instructions for switching keyboard with keybinding

Typing Accents
These are similar to the PC. However, I am not sure how to do all of these. If you prefer this method, you could research it on your own.

(When you type quotes you'll likely need to switch back to the regular keyboard.)

Linux (US International Keyboard)

Your distribution should have a Keyboard application with Layout settings. There you can add English (US, international with dead keys) as an additional keyboard. In the same section there is usually an option for a keyboard shortcut to toggle between input keyboards. The method to type accents with the English US International keyboard is the same as Windows (see above).

Rules for the stressed syllable and when an accent is needed

Every word has a stressed syllable, i.e. a syllable that is said with more emphasis than the others in the word.

If a word ends in a vowel, n, or s, the stress falls on the second to last syllable. Examples:
  • com-pu-ta-do-ra
  • mo-re-no
  • jo-ven
  • pa-ra-bri-sas
If a word ends in any other consonant, the stress is on the last syllable.
  • ca-mi-nar
  • ru-ral
  • fe-liz
  • co-mu-ni-dad
However, if there is an exception to this rule, an accent is added communicate it.
  • es-ta-ción
  • pe--cu-la
  • -piz
  • -la-ba

Revisión de español en documentos

Check spelling and grammar in your document:

Right click where there are colored squiggly underlines to see suggestions for correction. However, do not blindly trust them as they are often not accurate. Look up needed changes when in doubt.

If you already have written some in Spanish before setting the language, hit ctrl a or cmd a on a Mac to select all, and then set the language.
