Machu Picchu is located in Peru, 80 kilometers northwest of Cuzco. The famous lost city of the Incas lay hidden in spite of the Spanish invasion for three centuries and was “discovered” by the American Hiram Bingham in 1911. Because it was not invaded by the Spaniards, its beauty is preserved almost intact. The city was used mainly for ceremonial and religious purposes, and it is divided into two sectors: an urban and agricultural area. The careful urban planning suggests that Machu Picchu was constructed under of the supervision of the Incan state.
